London ist stillgelegt. Die schlimmsten Schnefälle seit 18 Jahren haben die Hauptstadt komplett aus dem Rhythmus gebracht. Alle Buslinien wurden augesetzt, die Tube verkehrt auf vier Strecken gar nicht, auf allen anderen nur teilweise. Der London City Airport wurde geschlossen, genuso wie Luton. Auf Gatwick und Heathrow wurden Landebahnen geschlossen; von und nach Gatwick fahren keine Züge.

Auch auf den Straßen herrscht Chaos, “highway officers told they had responded to 1,735 incidents over a 24-hour period”. Einige Autobahnen waren über Nacht gesperrt, jedoch sind nun meist die Zubringerstraßen das Problem. In einigen Grafschaften wurde bereits angekündigt, dass die Schulen weitestgehend geschlossen bleiben.

Die Bevölkerung wurde aufgefordert, es sollen nur “essential journeys” gemacht werden. Zudem wurden die Autofahrer angehalten, “to ensure they keep warm clothes in their vehicles if they were planning to go out, or else risk “flirting with hypothermia”.”

SCHOOL TEACHING CANCELLED TODAY

Given the severe weather conditions and the likelihood of worse to come, the School has taken the decision to CANCEL ALL TEACHING for today, Monday 2nd February 2009. Staff are advised to remain at home if they cannot easily get into the School. The situation for tomorrow will be reviewed later today. In view of the further heavy snow forecast for this afternoon and tomorrow, and consequent transport disruption, the following are the arrangements at the School for today and tomorrow:

TODAY
Staff are advised that they may leave work early this afternoon at a time agreed with their line managers to ensure they are able to return home safely. Staff who experience difficulties in travelling home should contact the Security Team at main reception 0207 955 2000 .

The Library will close today at 5 pm .

As previously announced, public events at the School this evening have been cancelled.

Please be cautious about snow falling from roofs when walking near buildings.

TUESDAY 3 FEBRUARY
Teaching for Tuesday 3 February is cancelled . The Library will attempt to open tomorrow with a limited service, but please check for further announcements.

Staff should try to come into work tomorrow, Tuesday 3 February, if they are able to do so safely.

Vorhin gab es Pizza zum Mittagessen. Die Straßen sind alle voller Schneematsch und es schneit immer noch. Hier und da brechen spontane Schneeballschlachten aus, gerade weil hier neben unserem Wohnheim noch ein Wohnheim des UCL ist, bietet sich das natürlich an.
